Bill's Minor Hockey Outreach

The ideology behind Heart of Hockey Outreach is really very simple.  It is my attempt, as a grateful artist, to return to children the wonder and excitement created by art and literature.  That feeling, given to me so freely and with such abundance when I was young, is one that I want to instill in the children of today.  This outreach is a way of "paying it forward".  In addition, the magical world of words and pictures is always best enjoyed when it is shared.

In recent year's I have enjoyed one of life's most precious gifts: reading my books - The Moccasin Goalie and The Final Game - to young children in Canadian schools.  There is always an atmosphere of excitement as I speak to them about my favourite things: reading books, drawing pictures, and playing hockey!  We enter our own magical world through literature and art, and that magic comes to life in the classroom.  The children leave energized after looking at these gifts in a new light.

As a devoted father of five children, I spent many joyful hours with my own children and I learned to appreciate the innocence of their world.  My children were stimulated and inspired by art and literature and I observed what activated their imagination and awakened their ability to dream.

Further, my love of team sports is boundless, and I used the metaphor of hockey to alert children to the critical social aspects of living: loyalty, teamwork, and that most elusive of all life skills, selflessness!

My outreach to children is through my stories, my readings and speaking engagements, and by giving demonstrations on drawing.  A list of schools where I have spoken in recent years is provided below.  If your school or group is interested in such activities, please contact me.
